If you’re new to blogging, then you may be getting hung up on niche selection.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s actually very important to get this right before you start, even before you buy your domain name.
One of the biggest mistakes newbies make is rushing this step only to find a few weeks or months later that they’ve chosen a niche that is too competitive, makes little-to-no money, or just doesn’t hold enough interest for them.
By choosing a micro niche for blogging, you make the process a whole lot easier on yourself, and you cut out a ton of the competition before you start.
Here in this article, I’m going to tell you what you need to know to choose a good micro niche, and give you a huge list of micro niche ideas for blogging to get you started.

What Is a Micro Niche?
A micro niche is a highly specific business category that provides a laser-focused offering to its target audience and customer.
Micro niches are also sometimes referred to as sub-niches. Basically, a micro-niche, or sub-niche, drills down from large top-level niches that are very broad.
An example of a top-level niche (broad niches) would be ‘Finance’. Finance is a huge topic with many sub-topics. A few examples include debt consolidation, asset management, investing, financial freedom, saving money, etc. Each of these can be considered a micro-niche of the finance niche.
What Is a Micro Niche Blog?
A micro-niche blog is a blog that is entirely focused on the sub-niche you have selected from the top-level niche category.
Indeed, there will likely be multiple categories for you to write about within your micro-niche. However, the entire blog will be focused on serving the people who are interested in this particular topic.
A micro-niche blog is a great way to get started when it comes to blogging. However, if the micro-niche is very small, then you may find you run out of blog post ideas at some point.
To prevent this from happening, choose a domain name that is related to your micro-niche blog idea, but is still broad enough that you can expand into a new sub-niche later. Consider the top-level niche you’re working in when choosing a name for your blog.
Why Choose a Micro Niche For Blogging?
When it comes to blogging, it can be very helpful to choose a micro-niche for a number of reasons.
Let’s take the finance niche as an example again.
So, if you wanted to start a finance blog and decide to cover anything and everything related to finance then you’re gonna get lost in the crowd. It’s a highly competitive space with a number of big players in the game like NerdWallet, ThePennyHoarder, and TheMotleyFool, to name just a few.
Going head-to-head with these guys just won’t be possible, unless you’ve got a huge budget behind you. And even then, as a new blog, you’ve still got a lot of catching up to do.
So, the answer for you to be able to compete and still get traffic is to drill down as much as possible on a micro-niche. This way your blog can become super-relevant for your ultra-specific category.
And when it comes to ranking in search engines, relevance plays a big part.
There may be bigger sites in your niche that are more authoritative than you, but if Google perceives your site to be more relevant for a specific topic, then they’ll give you enough credit to outrank the big guys for your key terms.
Defining your micro-niche will also make it easier for you to find good long-tail keywords to rank for, think of content ideas, and speak to your target audience.
Pros and Cons of Micro Niche Blogs
While there are a lot of advantages to building a micro-niche blog to gain organic search traffic, this strategy does also have some drawbacks too.
Here are the pros and cons of choosing a micro niche for blogging.
Pros of Micro Niche Blogs
- Easier to build your target audience
- Your conversion rates can be better since your audience is super-specific
- You can grow your blog more quickly
- You have more chance of standing out
- You can build more topical relevance for your target keywords
- You can outrank big sites for certain keywords once Google perceives your site is more relevant to the topic
- Easier to think of blog post ideas
Cons of Micro Niche Blogs
- There will be a ceiling to how much traffic, and therefore, the money you can make with your blog
- You might run out of content ideas
- Not as easy to expand beyond your chosen sub niche topic
How To Find Micro Niche Blog Ideas
I’m going to share lots of micro niche topic ideas in this article. However, if you want to expand beyond this list, then here are several ways to find good blogging niche ideas at a micro level.
Check Lists From Other Bloggers
You probably found this article by searching for micro niche ideas in Google or one of the other search engines. Although I’m going to cover a ton of niche ideas in this article for you, you may also want to go and check what other bloggers have listed too.
There are just so many niche ideas, chances are I might miss a few.
Use Amazon
Amazon has a huge database of products and actually has its own search engine. You can go to the Amazon marketplace and dig through the categories they have listed.
I also recommend checking which products are selling best on Amazon to give you an idea of the niche that has a hungry buying audience. This is a great way to tell if there’s money to be made in a niche.
Check The Big Sites
If you know the top-level niche you’d like to work in but you’re struggling to find your sub niche, take a look at some of the big sites in your market.
The big players usually cover multiple sub niches, and an easy way to identify them is to look at the categories they cover. Often, each of the categories is sub niches by themselves, some of which can be highly lucrative.
So, it might be worth your while to build a new niche site around just one of the categories covered on one of these monster blogs.
Check Affiliate Marketplaces
There are lots of affiliate marketplaces out there such as ClickBank, Commission Junction, ShareASale, and FlexOffers, to name just a few. Each of these platforms has a huge database of affiliate products organized by category.
Just one of these categories can be a gold mine for you, and it’s a great way to look for affiliate programs you can promote on your blog at the same time!
This is one of my favorite ways to find micro niches.

Generally, some of the most lucrative niches can be found under the following categories:
- Wealth and Personal Finance
- Business and Marketing
- Beauty
- Health
- Technology
That’s not to say you can’t make great money in some of the other niches on this list.

How To Start a Micro Niche Blog
The first step to starting a micro niche blog is to choose a niche. You can broaden your niche later as long as you haven’t restricted yourself too much by the domain name you have chosen.
The next step is to do extensive keyword research and plan out your content strategy. You can use a tool like ahrefs.com to analyze the competitors in your space, and download lists of keywords they are ranking for.
Then, organize your keywords into relevant article topic ideas. Make a list of at least 50 blog posts you plan to write and assign the relevant keywords to each post so you know ahead of time exactly what you’re going to write about.
Additionally, bloggers use writing tools to make sure they complete their content on time. In this situation, a paragraph writer helps come up with ideas and makes writing easier, making it faster to create content.
Then, organize each of these first 50 articles into the various sub-categories that you plan to cover on your blog. When it comes to writing, start with just one sub-category first (also known as a hub), and publish all those articles first before moving on to the articles in the next sub-category.
Wait. I’m getting ahead of myself.
Before you begin writing, after you have done your keyword research and planned your content, you need to choose a domain name.
I recommend you use Namecheap to buy your domain name.
Namecheap is one of the most trusted domain name registrars, and you can pick up your domain for as low as $0.99 through this link.
Choosing a domain name that is related to your top-level niche and also covers your micro niche (but does not define the micro niche) will give you room to expand beyond your micro niche a year or so down the line.
This is important in case you run out of content ideas for your micro niche. If you have followed this step, you will be able to continue to build your blog into other topics later.
Next, you need to buy an affordable hosting plan and upload WordPress as your content management system.
If you’re just getting started, I recommend you use ChemiCloud for your WordPress hosting. They are an affordable cloud-based hosting company with fast servers and excellent customer support in case you get stuck.
I have used ChemiCloud for a few micro niche site projects and have always been impressed with their service, especially at the low prices they charge.
You can get up to 65% discount on ChemiCloud hosting here.
Now you’re ready to start writing and publishing your content.
If this is your first time building a blog, read my article on the best affiliate programs for beginners to get started. Here you’ll find several great networks you can join for free to find good affiliate products to promote on your blog.
Lastly, I highly recommend you take a course that covers blogging, SEO, and affiliate marketing in depth.
If you take blogging seriously, then it has the potential to change your life financially if you know what you are doing.
